Updated preliminary FEMA flood maps identified the Marineland park property as a FEMA V flood zone (Coastal High Hazard with breaking waves) and the owners desired to investigate the validity of FEMA’s preliminary map results and zoning. ATM provided coastal engineering services to develop and submit a preliminary FEMA map appeal. FEMA allows submission of appeals to their preliminary flood maps before they become effective, granted technical and/or scientific evidence is shown that the areas are incorrectly zoned. ATM performed a detailed investigation of FEMA’s preliminary map data and found that the proposed zones were based on out of date site topography and incorrectly neglected a historic coastal revetment structure along the property shoreline. ATM provided updated analysis and mapping according to FEMA guidelines and submitted a comprehensive appeal package, siting the property in a lower risk FEMA A flood zone.
