Applied Technology & Management staff invited to lecture at International Marina Institute

Gainesville, Florida - Two senior staff members of Applied Technology and Management, Inc. (ATM) were invited to lecture at the International Marina Institute’s (IMI) marina manager training seminar, “Understanding the Marina Business,” in Atlanta. Sam Phlegar, P.E., senior vice president, and Robert Semmes, a water resources specialist at ATM, presented lectures at the IMI’s training course, which is designed to provide managers new to the marina industry with customized information on how to manage and operate their marina facilities.

“This seminar provides executives and managers from other industries with a global understanding of the marina industry and strategies for managing marinas,” said Tim Timpson, executive director of the IMI, a non-profit marine trade organization that provides professional certification for marina managers. Timpson says the IMI invites recognized experts in the marina industry to speak to marina operators seeking to better their marinas and the marina industry. “This course provides new managers an invaluable opportunity to question, learn from and network with marina experts that can shape the course of their professional careers and the success of their marinas.”

“It is an honor and a privilege to be invited to speak at the IMI,” said Phlegar, who spoke about marina due diligence and cost-effective solutions for improving the profitability of marinas. The biggest perk for attendees, Phlegar says, is the individualized attention they receive on how to maximize their marina’s investments. “This forum is an excellent venue for new marina managers to learn the ins and outs of the business from veterans and experts who are willing to share the secrets of their success.”

Semmes, a nationally recognized expert on dredging and dredge material placement, said lecturing at the IMI encourages speakers to keep abreast of the most current strategies, practices and state-of-the-art technologies used by marinas and marina operators. “People attend these courses to receive research-supported advice on the best practices for managing and operating their marinas,” said Semmes. “At the same time, they expect information and expert-opinions on the most cutting-edge and cost-effective practices they can apply to keep their marinas in the black.”

This is the second time Phlegar and Semmes have taught courses at the IMI’s (www.imimarina.org) manager training seminar, which was held October 6 – 10 at the Lake Lanier Islands Emerald Pointe Resort in Atlanta, Georgia.
