Project Summary
The Marina at Oxbow Meadows
is a municipal recreational development located along the banks
of the Chattahoochee River near Columbus, Georgia. ATM contracted
with the Columbus Consolidated Government (CCG) to perform a comprehensive
market study, engineering feasibility study and a funding alternatives
investigation to help ascertain the advisability of developing
the area.
To better understand the client's concept and goals for the
project, as well as the limitations and requirements of the proposed
development site, ATM conducted a design workshop prior to beginning
work on the project elements. Through this process, suitable
criteria for the market study and engineering feasibility were
established.
ATM collected public opinion data and boater registration information,
conducted telephone interviews with potential users and existing
competitive marinas, and identified various market segments with
respect to the proposed marina and associated recreation facilities.
These data were analyzed and presented to the CCG along with
additional planning, design and funding recommendations.
The site poses several engineering feasibility and design challenges.
Namely, the site is located in an oxbow of the upper Chattahoochee
River that is subject to annual flooding. Buildings had to be
located more than 25 feet above normal pool levels. The flooding
marina was anchored with telescoping piles to maintain stability
during large annual and periodic extreme water level changes.
