Project Summary

ATM was awarded a comprehensive coastal engineering services contract by Indian River County to develop specific engineering designs for four distinct critically eroding project areas (totaling 8 miles) along the county's Atlantic Ocean shoreline.

Initial efforts by ATM included a county-wide offshore sand source investigation and environmental resource mapping and assessment of the nearshore hardbottom. Seventy-seven (77) jet probes were conducted to delineate offshore areas which were subjected to additional investigation.

A total of 70 vibracores were obtained and sediments analyzed, from which two distinct borrow areas were identified. The total volumetric yield capacity of these two areas was determined to be in excess of six million cubic yards. 47 line-miles of diver-towed video transect mapping of the nearshore hardbottom resources was completed, after which characterization and planform mapping were conducted.

The first shoreline segment for restoration—the Ambersand shoreline (2.5 miles in length)—was submitted for regulatory agency approval, permits were secured, an ECL established, and contract documents prepared, issued and bid. Central to the approval process was the designation of five acres of mitigative reef (to offset impacts to the extension nearshore hardbottom) and the preparation and submittals of an Environmental Assessment document.

Project construction was completed in three months with a total of 536,000 cubic yards of sand placed on the shoreline, much of which is extensively utilized by the public.
